Arrocampo reservoir & Surroundings areas

The Arrocampo Reservoir and its surrounding ponds are bordered by dense wetland vegetation, dominated by Typha latifolia. This habitat supports a rich and diverse bird community, including species that are rare or have a limited distribution in Extremadura.
A total of nine heron species (family Ardeidae) have been recorded as breeders here, meaning that all heron species present in Europe can be found in this area. Spoonbills are also regularly observed throughout the year.

Among the reedbeds and wetland vegetation, visitors may encounter birds typical of Arrocampo, such as the Purple Heron, as well as more elusive species like the Water Rail and crakes (Spotted Crake, Little Crake, Baillon’s Crake) during migration periods.

The area is also important for birds of prey. Nearby colonies of the Lesser Kestrel and excellent observation points for the Black-shouldered Kite make it a hotspot for raptor enthusiasts. Other species include Osprey (passage and winter), Marsh Harrier (breeding and winter roosts), and from the surrounding hills, Imperial Eagle, Golden Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Booted Eagle, Egyptian Vulture and Peregrine Falcon.

During different seasons, the wetland supports a variety of small marsh birds, including Savi’s Warbler, Bearded Reedling, Penduline Tit, Reed Bunting and Bluethroat, among others.
