Birding in Gredos

This birding programme combines the wide variety of habitats found in the Sierra de Gredos, including oak woodlands, riverside forests, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests, broom scrub at different altitudes, alpine meadows and rocky mountain areas.
Over two full days, we will explore these habitats in search of their most representative bird species, allowing us to gain an in-depth understanding of the rich ornithological diversity of this mountain range.

We propose to realize it in two days of 8 hours of duration to know in depth the ornithological wealth of this mountain range.

Day 1: In search of mountain birds.

The first day is devoted to the highest areas of the Sierra de Gredos, always above the tree line. These open landscapes of alpine meadows, broom scrub and rocky slopes host a unique assemblage of mountain species.
Here we may observe birds such as Bluethroat, Water Pipit, Alpine Pipit, Common Accentor, Ortolan Bunting and Northern Wheatear. Rocky areas are especially good for species like Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush, Red-billed Chough and, with some luck, the very scarce Alpine Accentor.

Descending towards the upper forest edge, we will look for passerines including Melodious Warbler, Common Whitethroat and Orphean Warbler.
Day 2 – Oak woodlands, riversides and pine forests

Our second day focuses on the lower-altitude habitats of Gredos, exploring oak forests, riverside vegetation and Scots pine woods.

In these areas we can find species such as Common Crossbill, Firecrest, Goldcrest, Iberian Pied Flycatcher, Bonelli’s Warbler and Citril Finch, as well as raptors like Eurasian Hobby, Honey Buzzard and Booted Eagle.

Open scrublands and hedgerows are ideal for birds such as Red-backed Shrike, a typically northern species with a well-established population in Gredos. Near villages and traditional farmland we may also encounter Cirl Bunting and Rock Sparrow.
