Vegas Altas del Guadiana

This route explores the diverse habitats of Vegas Altas del Guadiana, including irrigated areas, dehesas, and steppe landscapes. The variety of habitats supports a rich diversity of bird species throughout the year.
The extensive rice fields attract significant winter concentrations of Common Crane, Greylag Goose, and various waders, especially during migration periods. Other wintering species include Bluethroat, Water Pipit, and Reed Bunting.

During migratory and wintering periods, large flocks of waders can be observed, including Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff, Common, Green and Marsh Sandpipers, Greenshank, Common and Spotted Redshank, Golden Plover, Dunlin, Little Stint, and Common Snipe.

Occasionally, Black Stork appears as a winter visitor and forms important post-nuptial concentrations in nearby reservoirs. With the arrival of spring, species such as the Collared Pratincole and Gull-billed Tern become frequent.

The area hosts several notable raptors. Black-shouldered Kite, Hen Harrier, and the abundant Marsh Harrier can be seen, both in winter and as breeding birds.
The plains support important populations of steppe birds, including Great and Little Bustards, Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Stone Curlew, and flocks of Golden Plover during winter. Passerines are also well represented, including Calandra Lark, Skylark (in winter), and Short-toed Lark (in spring and summer).
